Our Mission
Gurls Talk is a community-led non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the mental health and wellbeing of adolescent girls and young women*.
*We welcome anyone who identifies as a gurl, including non-binary young people and those exploring their gender.
Our Mission
Following Adwoa Aboah’s personal experience with mental health, Gurls Talk was formed with the goal of creating safe spaces – both on and offline – where gurls can access mental health resources, share their experiences, and support each other so they never feel alone or have to reach a breaking point.
By partnering with academic institutions and mental health experts, Gurls Talk seeks to provide accurate and accessible psychoeducation on a wide variety of topics relevant to our community. Through our programs, campaigns, resources, live events, and podcast, Gurls Talk works to destigmatize mental health conversations while fostering a supportive community that gives all gurls a voice.
Our story
At the heart of our story is the remarkable journey of supermodel and mental health advocate, Adwoa Aboah.
Adwoa Aboah was inspired to create Gurls Talk by her own mental health struggles as a teenager. She realized a safe space for girls and young women to come together, share experiences, and support each other was missing and urgently needed.
Gurls Talk is committed to providing a judgment-free space where girls and young women can freely express themselves. Gurls Talk has become a sanctuary for sharing experiences, accessing mental health resources, and building connections that go beyond the virtual realm.
Our community welcomes everyone who identifies as a "gurl," embracing non-binary young people and those exploring their gender identity. Through shared stories, valuable resources, and unwavering support, Gurls Talk ensures that no one feels alone on their mental health journey.
Join us as we continue to grow, thrive, and create a positive impact, one shared experience at a time. Together, we're redefining what it means to champion mental wellbeing for girls and young women everywhere.
Challenge
Girls’ mental health has long been neglected and has worsened over the last decade – especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. In a time when Americans are increasingly open about mental health, persistent stigma remains an obstacle to seeking care.
Theory of change
Research underscores the undeniable power of sharing our story — hearing someone's journey and how they sought help normalizes the experience and reduces stigma, encouraging individuals to seek help proactively.
Too often, our society addresses mental health only when it reaches crisis levels. Gurls Talk is committed to a proactive approach, reaching girls upstream to provide them with resources, tools, and a supportive community, ensuring they never have to reach a breaking point.
Through open conversations, psychoeducation, and shared stories, Girls Talk aims to normalize seeking help so that girls never feel isolated in their mental health journeys. As our community grows, we envision a ripple effect, transforming mental health from an isolated, individual experience to a community of support and belonging, ultimately contributing to a world where mental health is prioritized, destigmatized, and accessible to all.
Vision
Our vision is to cultivate a community where girls never feel isolated on their mental health journeys and don't have to reach a breaking point to seek help. We aspire to create an environment where open conversations about mental well-being are the norm, and accessible support is readily available to empower every girl to navigate her mental health with strength and resilience.
